Kid Friendly Games

Old Maid

Players take turns drawing cards from one another’s hands, trying to make matching pairs. The goal is to avoid being the last player holding the unpaired queen — the “Old Maid.” Add your own house rules to make the game even more fun!

Players:  3 or more
Deck:  1 standard deck (remove one queen)
Time:  5–15 minutes

Crazy Eights

Players take turns matching the number or suit of the top card in the discard pile — or draw from the deck if they can’t play. Eights (and jokers, if used) are wild and can be played at any time. The first player to play all their cards wins!

Players:  2–5 (6–10 with 2 decks)
Deck:  1 standard deck
Time:  10–15 minutes

WATCH

Go Fish

Players take turns asking others for specific cards to complete sets of four. If the player asked doesn’t have the card, they say “Go Fish!” and the asker draws from the pile. The game continues until all sets are made — the player with the most sets wins!

Players:  2–6
Deck:  1 standard deck
Time:  5–15 minutes

Snap

Players take turns flipping the top card of their pile. When two face-up cards match, the first player to shout “Snap!” wins both piles. The goal is to collect all the cards — quick reflexes make all the difference!

Players:  4 or more
Deck:  1 standard deck (remove jokers, or keep them in as wilds for added fun)
Time:  Around 5 minutes

I Doubt It

Players take turns laying cards face down in sequence — aces, twos, threes, and so on — announcing what they’ve played. Bluffing is allowed, but if someone challenges with “I doubt it!” and the cards don’t match, the bluffer takes the pile. The first to get rid of all their cards wins!

Deck:  1 standard deck (use 2 decks for 6+ players)
Time:  15–20 minutes

WATCH

War

Players each flip over the top card of their pile, and the highest card wins both. If there’s a tie, it’s “war” — each player lays down three cards and flips a fourth, with the higher card taking all. The goal is to capture every card in play.

Deck:  1 standard deck (remove jokers; use 2 decks for 6+ players or longer games)
Time:  10–40 minutes

Social Card Games

Rummy

Players try to form sets of matching cards or runs of consecutive cards in the same suit. On each turn, draw a card and discard one, aiming to be the first to play all your cards. Strategy and memory make this classic a favorite for all ages.

Time:  30 minutes to 2+ hours

Palace

Players take turns discarding cards in ascending order, using strategy and special combinations to outplay their opponents. The first player to run out of cards wins the game. Simple to learn but full of surprises, Palace is a fun mix of luck and planning.

Mao

In this unpredictable game, the goal is simple — get rid of all your cards. The twist? No one can explain the rules. Players must use observation and reasoning to figure them out as they go, avoiding penalties and racing to finish first.

President

Players race to be the first to play all their cards by laying down higher-ranked cards than the previous play. The first player out becomes the President for the next round — and gets to set the rules! Fun, fast, and full of table politics.

Deck:  At least 1 standard deck (add more decks for larger groups)

Poker

Players aim to create the best five-card hand using their own cards and, in some versions, shared community cards. After each round of betting, the player with the strongest hand wins the pot. No chips? Use coins, buttons, or paper markers instead!

Time:  Typically 2–3 hours

Ninety-Nine

The goal of this quick-thinking game is to keep the running total of cards played below 99. Each card has its own special value or rule, adding strategy and suspense with every turn. Simple to learn and fun to master!

Trick-Taking Card Games

Hearts

In this classic trick-taking game, players aim to avoid collecting hearts and the dreaded queen of spades. Each round, players pass three cards, then play one card per trick — following suit when possible. The player with the fewest points when someone reaches 100 wins.

Deck:  1 standard deck (remove select cards for 3, 6, or 7 players)

A classic and strategic trick-taking game that uses a unique deck made from multiple copies of each card. Players score points by winning tricks and forming specific card combinations, racing to reach 1,500 points first.
